“Whoever fails in the neoliberal performance society blames himself and is ashamed instead of putting the society or the system in question. The special intelligence of the neoliberal regimme is manifest here (….) In the neoliberal regime of self-exploitation, aggression is directed against oneself. This auto-aggressivity makes the exploited into a depressive, not into a revolutionary.”
· Byung-Chul Han, Psycho-Politics
Zer0 is a Human Time Specific Installation/Performance that arises from my desire to reconnect with my politically incorrect side.Between the many theories and analysis of our times, those that resonate most with me are those that affirm that the neo-liberal system in which we live converts political failures into personal problems and, in this way, blames and punishes the individual for his/her sufferings and misfortunes without assuming any responsibility for them.
But, what would happen if we tried to convert our personal questions into political questions?
What would happen if we tried to think that our "little" personal problems are in reality "big" political problems?
Zer0 is a long-time performance (minimum 5 hours no-stop), during on which the spectators will be able to interact with the performer, one at the time. The performance is structured like a game, divided in 5 sectors; every sector corresponds to one of the five senses and to one of the five elements.
The spectator that enters to play will find specific instructions that will guide him/her into an intimate and political journey through audio recordings video installations and specific actions. In the last sector there will be the encounter between spectator and performer.
It’s possible to have two levels of audience:
- The spectators that participate in the performance and make their own journey
- The public that will not participate into the performance, but that can see the installation/performance from outside.
The
Human Time Specific format facilitates a very specific investigation with time and human being.
Starting from personal inquisitiveness and life experience, in an unconventional space, and during a large frame of time, the performer interacts with one spectator at a time in order to facilitate a real and genuine encounter with each person.
Every encounter is a unique experience that generates very personal reactions within the spectator; performer and spectator are both receptive and responsive to one another in order to share openness and vulnerability.

Zer0 has been released in Kipaf 19 (Kolkata International Performance Art Festival 2019).
Here one of the critics it received:“Valentina Carlone and her interactive performance Zer0 at the Kolkata International Performance Art Festival 2019. This was some brilliant intervention in unfolding narratives using text, music, multimedia etc. where the routine was cleverly designed to disrupt what we take as routine and for granted about ourselves and others. The last bit about untangling skeins was especially revelatory.”
